Wickmere, Norfolk

Wickmere is a quiet hamlet made up of a few cottages built to provide accommodation for the workers on the Wolterton Estate, the family seat of the younger brother of the then Prime Minister, Robert Walpole.

Using Swallow Cottages as a base, it is possible to walk or cycle safely along quiet lanes, reach all of the North Norfolk coast and the local market towns.

Wickmere is close to Felbrigg Hall and within walking distance of Blickling Hall, two National Trust properties which are well worth a visit, both offering extensive woodland and lakeside walks as well as the houses themselves.

Other local attractions include the North Norfolk Steam Railway, The Shire Horse Centre, Seal Trips from Morston and the Norfolk Broads.

Overstrand, Norfolk

Overstrand, a crab fishing village just to the east of Cromer and within walking distance either along the beach or by the cliff top path, has safe sandy beaches which are ideal for young children to build sand castles, play beach cricket and football or hunt for crabs.

Sandcastles on the beachThe village first came to prominence when the 19th century pastime of sea bathing came into fashion. Regular visitors included The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Marlborough, Albert Einstein and Winston Churchill.

As a result of several rich and prominent persons building their country houses in Overstrand, it became known as "the village of millionaires". Between 1890 and 1905 a young Edwin Lutyens designed a chapel, two major houses and a housing estate.

Within the village there is a grocery store, post office, two pubs and a restaurant but no amusement arcades or similar. It is within reach of all North Norfolk's attractions, including the Norfolk Broads.
